Essence Velvet Stick Matt Lip Colors – Review

The matt finish lip is all the rage right now, and I must admit, I’m a huge fan of it. Almost every cosmetic brand out there has a matt lip color in their collection. Essence cosmetics just added a ton of new & exciting products to their permanent range, including these velvet stick matt lip colors, so, I decided to pick up two of these lip colors to test, in the shades, 01 Nude Hero – a pretty coral nude and 02 Peony Star – a beautiful cool mauve.

Essence claims:

Go matt! The velvet sticks offer silky matt results. The soft texture with a high coverage comes in a practical mini format and thanks to the large tip, application is quick and easy. They are available in delicate as well as intense colours.

The essence velvet stick matt lip colors come packaged in an easy to use convenient jumpo sized lip pencil design. Aren’t they just super cute? The texture of these are surprising nice, they’re very creamy, without feeling super dry. Pigmentation wise, they’re medium-to-full, buildable coverage. Once dried, they have more of a satin matt finish (hence, the name) Application wise, they glide on really smooth and feel super comfortable on the lips. Thanks to the small pencil-like tip, these give a precise application, which eliminates the need for a lip brush.

These lip colors don’t settle into lip lines or cling to dry patches, which I’m very pleased about. I always have the worst luck when it comes to matt formulas because they tend to be super drying on me. If you have the same issue, I’ll always recommend exfoliating and moisturizing your lips before application

And lastly, in terms of wear, these are unfortunately lacking in the longevity department. But considering the fact that they retail for a mere 37 bucks, how can you complain? They stay for around 4 hours until they gradually start to fade. They’re definitely not transfer-proof, so you’ll have to reapply after eating or drinking, which I honestly don’t mind because they’re so creamy.

My final thoughts? So far, I really like these, they’re incredibly inexpensive and are such great quality. My only complaint is that I wish there were more shades to choose from, otherwise I can definitely see myself reaching for these quite often, especially ‘Peony Star’ it’s one of my favourites. If you’re in the market for a new matt lipstick that doesn’t break the bank, I’d recommend checking these out.

The Essence Velvet Stick Matt Lip Colors retail for R36.95 at Clicks and Dis-Chem Pharmacies nationwide
