5 Foods to Eat for Amazing Skin

When many of us think about ‘beauty’, our minds almost always go to our outer looks. And when we think about ‘natural beauty’, we still often tend to think of how we look on the outside. But what about the inside? How we treat and take care of the inside of our body affects our outside just as much as any makeup, cream, or serum does – if not more.

Now I am not talking about being the most giving person or striving towards any superstar personalities or anything like that when I am talking about ‘the inside of our body’, but what I am talking about is our inner health.

I’m talking about nutrition – our diets. Ultimately, the choices we make on how we fuel our bodies, aka what we eat, completely shows in our outer appearances, whether we like it or not. When we eat clean, whole foods filled with beneficial nutrients, and maintain a balanced diet, our bodies thrive in all kinds of ways. Yet, when we eat many processed, nutrient stripped foods on a regular basis, our bodies will cry out and beg us for nutrients. Cries caused by an imbalanced nutrient intake can come in many forms. Some signs that occur on the outside of our bodies that we can notice include things like acne, redness of skin, brittle hair and nails, bloodshot eyes, dull gums, weak teeth, thin hair, and much more. When we ingest and fuel our bodies with harmful oils, addictive sugars, and an abundance of empty calorie foods like I mentioned earlier, our skin health is often one of the first places where we can tell that our bodies are needing more nutrients, although it is most definitely not the only place.

But guess what?

There are countless tasty, nutrient dense foods that not only can reverse the negative side effects of an imbalanced diet that I mentioned above, but can make us glow- almost literally (que glowing face – are you ready for one?). So, I am here to shine light on some of my favorite foods that can boost both your inner and outer beauty.

My 5 Favourite Beauty Foods:

Collagen – Collagen is a vital structural protein in our bodies. It helps make your skin tight and supple, helps your skin grow, aids in gut health, and many other things. It also acts as your skin’s source of damage control since it helps repair and renew damaged skin. The more we age, the less we naturally produce collagen which is why it is key to continue to ingest it on a regular basis.

Healthy Fats – Yes, healthy fat is a thing, and they are actually really important for our bodies, both inside and out. Essential omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, walnuts, flax and chia seeds, assist in building skin cells, reduce inflammation, and help keep your skin taut while hydrating the skin. Olive oil and coconut oil are also very hydrating. Coconut oil has antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties that may show in your skin health. Olives and extra virgin olive oil is high in vitamin E and A which help tone and strengthen your skin. So basically, fats can be a good thing for us (in moderation, of course).

Fruit – Citruses, fruits and berries are filled with many vitamins and nutrients that can make you glow both on the inside and out. One of things often highlighted about citrus fruits are their high amounts of vitamin C. This vitamin, alongside the others, helps in collagen formation, which like I mentioned earlier, is important in skin cell repair and regeneration. Plus, it helps your hair grow. The nutrients from fruits help keep your skin looking young and vibrant. Antioxidants found in these foods also help rid of the natural free radicals in our bodies before they attack our healthy skin cells. So, here’s to fruits towards supple skin and beauty health!

Tea – Tea is also filled with lots of antioxidants that help increase oxygen and blood circulation to the skin. When it does that, it also helps nutrients access the skin easier. Plus, because tea is basically water, it is very hydrating (see water below).

Water – Our body is basically just a bunch of cells, and cells need water to survive. So it is safe to say that by drinking water, we can help improve almost every part of our body. Drinking water helps the outside of our bodies because it hydrates skin, flushes out impurities and toxins, assists in delivering nutrients all over, improves elasticity, reduces redness in our skin, and more. Sweating it out (getting that workout on, let’s go, whoo!) and then drinking more water will help detoxify our skin. Not only does water hydrate our skin, but is the best hydrator for our hair and helps vitamins get absorbed better. All in all, the list of water benefits could go on for days, so I’ll just leave here by saying: drink more water.

Living a balanced lifestyle is important and I am all about treating yourself, but next time you need a little extra motivation to reach for the salad instead of the fries, think of not only how you will feel after but also how you may look after.
